WHEN YOU CRY

Ditch the darjeeling
Quit the crossword
Leave the thought suspended in midair
Time won’t stop because the record still spins

Let the pot boil over
And the phone ring off the hook
Leave the logs to burn to ash
And the wet load to fester in the drum

Hear the door swing on its hinges
As the deadline passes
Have the bath overflow
And the book’s spine break

Lunch has gone cold
The big shop’s defrosting in the car
Fido is whining in the hall
Dinner and the dog be damned

The record clicks off
Hours tick by on the mantel clock
And still I hold you in my arms
And breathe you in
